In stark irony, the city’s burgeoning infrastructure lacks even the basic firefighting equipment.With an estimated population of over 20 lakh, which is likely to double in next 20 years, the city has been completely ignored by the UP government when it comes to fund allocation for the fire department. This year, the government has allocated a measly Rs 2.5 crore.The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) will act as a single transport authorityNCR partsfor the region covering various modes of transport like buses, Metro and the Railways, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said at the Assocham meeting on Friday.The UMTA will work out modalities for a common fare collection system for various modes of public transport, a common passenger information system and integration in terms of infrastructure, fares, operations and information.The fire at the Indian Oil Building in 2008,Blu-ray Ripper, which left two dead, illustrates the lack of preparedness of the Fire department in dealing with fires in multi-storey structures. The fire, which broke out on the building’s fourth floor at 7.15 pm, took three hours to control. Fourteen fire tenders and a hydraulic platform. — which Noida’s Fire department lacks — had to be called in from Delhi. “In the Indian Oil Building fire, we did not have a ladder to reach the fourth storey. We had to call in the Electricity department’s ladder vehicle,” an official of the Gautam Budh Nagar Fire department said.
