City of St. Augustine's ChiefDoor curtainOfficer John Regan said a busy street right next to Aviles also keeps people from walking down it.

"What happens to Aviles Street is when people come to the plaza and they have to cross a two-lane highway which is King Street, that's a psychological barrier," Regan said. "It's almost as if there's this invisible curtain, and so you have to have something that attracts people down Aviles Street." The city is working on pumping some life into the old street. Changes would include new lighting, outdoor beautification, and sidewalk dining.
