The History of the Trench Coat

The secret was in the material, one that didn’t allow water to penetrate and therefore protect soldiers in the trenches from the elements — hence its name, "the Trench." On their return from the war, the men continued to wear their trench in normal civilian life and this practical raincoat soon became popular for both men and women.
