A guide to the UK summer season
When Edward VII described with relish the races #xat Goodwood in Sussex as "a garden party with racing tacked on" he was really describing the English social season. The Scots, Irish and Welsh have numerous world-famous sporting and cultural events; only the English insist on attending theirs in the right hats.
This makes them great for people-watching and even better as an excuse for a mini-holiday: take your glad rags (if required – as you'll see below,Blu-ray Ripper, they aren't always), tack on a nice little hotel, plan a gorgeous walk to recover from your hangover or your losses and get ready to enjoy an utterly English summer.
Most of the classic summer social occasions are English, rather than British, simply because "the Season" ran from Easter to August 12 – when grouse shooting began – in order to keep everyone entertained while Parliament was still sitting. The most popular events, therefore, took place within easy reach of London. They still do: it seems extraordinary that hats in the 21st century the whole structure not only survives but thrives, with some events approaching their 300th anniversaries.
There are people who believe the party begins with the Grand National, or even before Easter with the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but somehow it's the Chelsea Flower Show – which, along with Royal Ascot, is an annual favourite of the Queen – that really feels like the start of the English summer season.
For all events, dress codes have relaxed, tickets are easier to get – unless you're aiming for the grand enclosures – and the hats are still there, but in a minority. For the rest of us, unhampered by morning coats or what the Derby dress code refers to coyly as "substantial fascinators"#x (a sort of Alice band with feathers), it's a double spectacle: the race, regatta or opera – and the hats watching elite.
