United introduced free upgrades for elite passengers, a longtime Continental perk. Continental is dropping economy-cabin meals on most of its shorter flights, something United hasn't offered in years.Ultimate responsibility falls to Smisek, 55, who will become chief executive of the new airline once the transaction is approved by shareholders and government regulators, a process the merging companies expect to occur by year-end.Decorative fruits"It's too early to know whether Continental (will) #x run the joint effort the way they've run their own shop," said airline blogger Gary Leff.
